100 Years Ago: 1924

The announcement that Paul Whiteman and his orchestra are coming to Lewiston will interest a large public. There are few persons who do not respond to the rhythm and the joyousness of dance music — if it is good enough.

Paul Whiteman’s is the best to be had. His fame as a jazz artist is international. Paul Whiteman’s jazz is as far removed from the sort one generally hears by the small town dance orchestras as the one-ring circus that tours the New England villages is removed from Barnum & Bailey’s or the brass band of the country town from Sousa’s Band. It is jazz deluxe.

50 Years Ago: 1974

Churches are closed weekdays, services and various meetings having been moved to other locations in order to preserve heating oil which these days is quickly becoming scarcer, and needless to say, costlier.

The current fuel-energy crisis has also resulted in All L-A churches cutting out completely, or largely reducing, the amount of lighted outdoor Christmas decorations.

Some church people have reacted by eliminating outdoor lighting and by reducing the use of church bells.

Probably the most visible effect in the community has been the curtailment of outdoor lighting at the High Street Congregational Church in Auburn. The graceful colonial spire of that church has been lighted at night for years, but now it is dark.

25 Years Ago: 1999

Andrea Forbush has been named youth sports and teen director at the YMCA of Auburn-Lewiston in Auburn.

Forbush volunteered in the youth basketball program and the Teen Center for the past three years. A graduate of Edward Little High School, she earned her bachelor of science degree in health education at Plymouth State College in Plymouth, N.H. She recently attended her first YMCA training conference, “Membership by Design.”

Living in Lewiston, she enjoys softball, basketball and mountain biking. She is a former junior varsity softball coach at ELHS.
