OTISFIELD – Brian C. Hughes, 66, of Otisfield, died Wednesday evening, Nov. 27, 2024 at the Andwell Hospice House in Auburn after a long battle with cancer.
He was born on July 23, 1958, in Norwalk, Conn., a son of Edward C. and Shirley L. (Nutting) Hughes as the youngest of four boys. He was raised in Darien, Conn. and was a 1976 graduate of Darien High School.
Brian married the love of his life, Kimberly Burke, on Sept. 11, 1982. They raised four children and made their home in Stamford, Conn. Having grown up and spending every summer at a family cottage on Pleasant Lake, he and Kim relocated their family to Otisfield in August of 1995.
Brian worked for 18 years at New England Electric C&R Caron in Naples. He started his own HVAC company, Hughes Air Conditioning and Refrigeration, serving the Lakes Region area before retiring in 2023.
Brian was actively involved in his children’s activities, often coaching their sports teams. He also served as Assistant Scoutmaster to Troop 196 of Oxford for many years.
Brian enjoyed fishing, especially his annual fishing trip with his childhood friends. They spent many years on Great Pond in the Belgrade Lakes area sharing stories, laughs, and occasionally catching a fish or two.
His love of racing started well before he even got his driver’s license. During his years in Connecticut, you could often find him at Waterford Speedbowl. Since moving to Maine, he raced various cars at Oxford Plains Speedway before finding a home with the Wicked Good Vintage Racing Association, where he raced at various tracks around Maine and New Hampshire in his ‘57 Chevy and his ‘67 Chevelle. When he wasn’t fishing or racing he was spending time with family and friends on a boat or around a campfire on Pleasant Lake.
He is survived by his wife, Kimberly of Otisfield; children Jessica L. Hughes of Auburn, Jillienne Hughes Hewins and husband Steve of Rome, Christopher A. Hughes and wife Meagan of Maplewood, N.J., Kelley A. MacGregor and husband Raymond of Otisfield; grandchildren Ryan, Gemma, Madelyn and Amelia; siblings, David Hughes of Waterford, Conn., Mark Hughes of Elizabeth City, N.C., and Susan Jones of St. Petersburg, Fla.
