100 Years Ago: 1924

A meeting of the Citizens committee suggested recently by Mayor Brann to undertake the promotion of a new hotel in Lewiston was called by the mayor Friday afternoon at his office in city hall. He would put it on the basis of a business proposition, he said, and referred to the encouragement he has received from men familiar with the hotel business in New England.

The committee’s first business would be to organize; study the situation and prepare a course of action.

50 Years Ago: 1974

Fifteen months of study and work at the St. Mary’s Hospital School of Medical Technology ended Friday for five students who graduated in ceremonies at Desaulniers Hall. They are Mrs. Ann Barnett, Livermore Falls; Susan Kimball, Buckfield; Mrs. Nancy Martin, Thompson; Robin Kilbreth, Mechanic Falls; and Louise Castonguay, Livermore Falls. Mrs. Charlotte Starbird, laboratory supervisor, participated in graduation ceremonies where students were awarded diplomas.

The SMGH School of Medical Technology is directed by Drs. Robert D. Wakefield and Albert Hunter, pathologists, and Mrs. Starbird. Miss Doris Poulin, M.T. (ASCP) was the instructor for the theoretical aspect of the course.

Bacteriology, blood banking, histology, urinalysis, hematology, and clinical chemistry were among subjects covered in their training. Under supervision, students also performed inpatient and outpatient laboratory work, kept records and alternated weekend duties.

25 Years Ago: 1999

Certificates of membership and pins were presented by President Eliane Rogers at the November meeting of Stone-Smart American Legion Auxiliary in Norway. In the photo at left, Rogers, left, is presenting a 50-year membership pin to Ethel LaCourse. Also receiving a 50-year pin was Winona Clark who was unable to attend the meeting. In the photo at right, Rogers is presenting a 70-year certificate of membership to Della Klament. Also receiving certificates were Ruth Gurney, 25 years; Dorothy Shackley and Bernice Palmer, 20 years; and Dolores Cawthon, Barbara Pendelton and Shelly Decato Wood, 10 years.
