DEAR SUN SPOTS: Quite some time ago, a reader asked about a cookbook with vegan recipes and specifically a recipe for vegan burgers. I cut that column out and put it in an envelope in my recipe file but now I cannot find it. Those burgers are great! Would you be able to share the information again? — No name, Lewiston
ANSWER: That column was from 2022 and the cookbooks mentioned are The Oh She Glows Cookbook(s) by Angela Liddon. There are three of them. Of course, you can get them online but see if your local bookstore has them or can order them for you. They are super and everything is delicious. I have made most of the recipes more than once.
The burger recipe is from Oh She Glows. You can bake them in a 350 degree oven:
Soak 3 tablespoons ground flax seed in 1/3 cup warm water for 5 minutes to thicken. In a large bowl, mash 1 (15-ounce) can drained, rinsed black beans. Mix in 1 cup shredded carrot or sweet potato, 1/3 cup chopped parsley or cilantro, 2 minced cloves of garlic, 1/2 cup chopped red or yellow onion, 1/2 cup toasted sunflower seeds, 3/4 cup gluten-free oat flour, 1/2 teaspoon olive oil, 2 tablespoons coconut aminos, 1 teaspoon each chili powder, oregano, cumin, and sea salt, and freshly ground pepper to taste.
Shape the mixture into eight patties and place on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Bake for 15 minutes then flip and bake for 15 minutes more or until firm and golden. Enjoy!
DEAR SUN SPOTS: Do you have names of local repairmen who work on stoves and microwaves? I need to have them repaired. The instruction booklets are no help at all. — Sue, Lewiston
ANSWER: In the Rolodex I have Brown’s Appliance (https://www.brownsapplianceservices.com, 212-3444); The Appliance Guys (https://theapplianceguys.business.site/, 440-4265; Brooks Appliance & Repair (713-6221); and Wayne’s Appliance Repair (225-2966).
DEAR SUN SPOTS: I brought my potted geraniums inside just before the first frost and put them in a sunny spot. They did well at first but now they are leggy and not blooming as vigorously. I don’t want to lose them. Is it too late to do something to keep them looking nice? — Patsy, no town
ANSWER: A local greenhouse will be happy to help you with specifics but I bring my geraniums inside in the winter too and let them do their thing. The key is to have them in a sunny spot but away from any heat sources. Just keep picking off the dead leaves and blooms and don’t let them get too dry.
When it’s warm again, give them a good pruning, freshen the soil, and set them outside again, bringing them inside on colder nights. They should be just fine!
