Ruth Ann Childs
AUBURN – Ruth Ann Childs, beloved mother, grandmother, and matriarch, passed away on Dec. 26, 2024, at the age of 82. Ruth devoted her life to caring for her family and creating a loving home for all. She was the proud mother of four daughters, and her unwavering love and support extended beyond her own children to anyone who needed it. Ruth’s nurturing spirit was a constant source of strength for her family. She was the heart and soul of their world.
Born to parents Vaughn Lohnes Libby and Harlan C. Libby in Rumford, Ruth held a deep fondness for both her time at her grandparents’ home and her time near the Swift River in Byron. After graduating from Mexico High School, class of 1960, Ruth soon married Kenneth Childs (deceased) and settled into their home in Auburn where she lived the remainder of her years.
Prior to Ruth and Kenny’s divorce in 1992, they co-owned and operated a successful linen business, Childs Linen Service, starting the business in 1976. The linen service remains family-owned and continues to serve the Lewiston/Auburn community and beyond.
Ruth enjoyed the last few decades of her life with her loving partner, Craig Chicoine. They took great joy in tending to their gardens by the pool and feeding the cardinals and other animals in their yard. A lifelong lover of books, Ruth was often seen with a novel in hand. She was known for her wisdom, and people often sought her counsel, trusting her to offer guidance and support in all matters. Above all, Ruth’s true calling was as a matriarch. She loved her family beyond measure and her legacy will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate to know her.
Ruth was predeceased by her parents; her brother, Sam Harlan Libby; and other cherished family members.
She leaves behind a family forever changed by her kindness, wisdom, and unshakeable love. Ruth is survived by her partner, Craig Chicoine; four daughters, Jennifer Bertrand (Brian), Veronica Morrill (Barry), Rebecca St. Pierre (Dan), and Samantha Childs (Eric Henson); grandchildren Jessica, Jaclyn, Benji, Jennifer, Michaela, Spencer, Korey, Gabe, Salem, and Tyler; great-grandchildren Liam, Kayden, Vance, Tiiraya, Ruthann, Landon, and Jenna; as well as many beloved family members.
She will be deeply missed, but her memory will live on in every cherished story, every moment of laughter, and in the love she so generously gave to all.
Services will be held at the Albert and Burpee Funeral Home, 253 Pine St., Lewiston, on Saturday, Jan. 11, with visitation from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. Interment in the spring, Gracelawn Memorial Park.
