MECHANIC FALLS — A trailer on North Street was gutted by flames Wednesday afternoon and a cat was believed to have perished in the blaze.
Firefighters and equipment from Minot, Poland, Hebron and Oxford assisted Mechanic Falls crews after the trailer at 327 North St. went up in flames shortly before 4 p.m.
Firefighters struggled in cold and icy conditions, battling the second fire of the day on North Street — another mobile home had been reported on fire earlier in the day at 312 North St.
The trailer that burned is located at the end of a dirt drive more than 100 yards from the road.

There were no reports of serious injury and it wasn’t immediately clear if anyone was home when the trailer went up in flames.
By 4:30 p.m., representatives from the American Red Cross were said to be headed to the scene. The couple who were left homeless by the fire were said to be staying with a relative Wednesday night.
Later in the day, crews remained at the scene, mopping up and preparing to begin an investigation into the cause of the fire.
