Pauline Marceau
LIVERMORE FALLS – Pauline Marceau, 92, a Livermore Falls resident for nearly three-quarters of her life, died Jan. 19, 2025 at The Pierce House in Farmington.
She was born July 12, 1932, in Augusta as Pauline Rebecca Sproul, one of 12 children of John and Susan (Harvey) Sproul, along with her twin brother, Paul Francis “Bucky” Sproul. She graduated in 1950 from Cony High School in Augusta, then worked briefly for New England Telephone and Telegraph.
Pauline married Ralph Marceau in 1954. They lived for decades on Route 133 in Livermore Falls in a house that Ralph built. They raised six children there, as well as pigs, springer spaniels, and vegetables. Eventually, their 16 grandchildren swarmed through the house periodically as well.
The Marceau homestead included a big sloping field behind the house, which attracted children with sleds and toboggans from all over town in the winter. David recalls that their breakneck sledding runs often prompted his mother to yell, “If you don’t stop that, you’re going to break your neck!”
Pauline decorated cakes for Ronny Therrien’s Bakery in Jay, and she later worked for Livermore Falls Baking Company in Livermore Falls. The family recalls fondly the many whoopie pies, Easter cakes and Needham’s that she made over the years.
She took pride in her handwriting, noting that she received a certificate in 1946 from the Palmer School of Business Writing for her penmanship. She spent much of her spare time knitting and crocheting. She said the most exciting thing she ever did was serve as a page in the Maine Legislature during her senior year at Cony. In later life, she traveled to Florida, California, Illinois and Canada, many times visiting relatives or friends. She made her water-skiing debut during a party celebrating her 70th birthday at son Bill’s lakefront home.
A lifelong Roman Catholic, Pauline was a parishioner at St. Rose of Lima Church in Jay for 66 years.
