George A. Dudley pleaded not guilty Wednesday in the Lewiston municipal court to a charge of shoplifting. He was fined $25 and cost. The respondent is alleged to have taken a slice of cheese and several cans of peas valued at $1.40 at Tarr’s market on Main street Wednesday, while the proprietor was in the rear of the store filling out an order for hamburg steak. Officer Kelley concealed behind some merchandise, during the time Dudley is alleged to have committed the larceny, and arrested the man on Main street, shortly after the hamburg steak purchase was made.
Mr. Tarr told a reporter that goods had been reported missing from the counters on several occasions, after he had filled out the respondent’s daily hamburg steak order. Tuesday night he became suspicious and notified the police. A trap was laid Wednesday morning which resulted in the arrest.

The Lake Auburn Watershed Protection Commission Thursday approved spending $70,900 to purchase two key parcels of land near Lake Auburn, the Twin Cities’ drinking water source.
Commissioners voted 7 to 0 to spend $40,000 to purchase 80 acres of land running parallel to Maple Hill Road and extending to within 200 feet of the lake.
In a separate vote, they approved spending $30,900 for life estate rights to a small lot of land and building on Church Street located near the water intake pipe end of Lake Auburn in the watershed’s most protected zone.
With the addition of the 80 acres, the commission now owns more than 1,500 acres in the watershed, said Normand Lamie, superintendent of the Auburn Water District.
