Craig M. Gammon

CANTON – Craig M. Gammon, 79, of Canton died on Feb. 1, 2025, at Andwell Hospice House in Auburn. He was born on Sept. 11, 1945, to Geraldine and Alfred Gammon. He grew up in Sumner with his three brothers, but his fondest memories were on his grandparents’ farm in Hartford.

He was a farmer from a very early age until the day that he died. On Oct. 13, 1967, he bought the Gammon Farm in Canton with his first wife, Linda. Together with his family, he milked Holsteins cows. When he sold the milking herd and leased the barn, he continued to hay the fields and planted corn to sell to other farmers. He continued to have beef cows at the farm so the fields would never be empty. He was able to reside on his beloved farm until his death.

For 15 years, he was the road commissioner for Canton. He worked hard to improve roads and keep them plowed in the winter.

On Dec. 30, 1981, he married Susan Cox, and they continued to build the farm together. They enjoyed 36 years together until her passing in 2017. He enjoyed having his three children on the farm and being surrounded by his grandchildren. He loved when people stopped by to visit, have a beer, and share a story. You could find him in his garage keeping the fire going with Nascar on the TV. He loved being in his fields and driving tractors. He was a farmer in the truest sense of the word.

He is survived by his children, Randy Gammon and his girlfriend, Betty Meader of Canton; Steve Gammon and his wife, Janice of Hebron; Elaine Gammon and her boyfriend, Derek Bryant of Dixfield. He will be missed by his grandchildren, Devyn and Cody Gammon and Alex and Lauren Ferland. His brothers, Roland Gammon, Dale Gammon, Kim Gammon and his wife, Debbie. He also leaves behind nieces and nephews and special friends. He is preceded by his parents, his wife Susan, and brother Bruce.

The family would like to thank Andwell Hospice House and their program for the amazing care that Craig received over the last two years, we will be forever grateful.

Family and friends are invited to Craig’s memorial visitation on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2025, from 12 to 1 p.m., at Wiles Remembrance Center, 308 Franklin Road, Jay, where at 1 p.m., his memorial service will take place followed by a comfort reception.
