Gerald A. Metz, M.D.
WILTON – Gerald A. Metz, M.D. 88, came to the end of his trail on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2025. He was born May 4, 1936, and grew up in Binghamton, N.Y., a railroad town and river town in green rolling hills. Attended Cornell and then graduated with a medical degree from University of Rochester, 1961. Internship followed, then two years active duty as Flight Surgeon for the 101st Airborne Division.
After three years of ophthalmology residency in Manhattan the family moved to Bangor, a railroad town and river town with rolling green hills that felt like home. He opened an office in Bangor in 1968 and practiced ophthalmology until retirement in 1996. He felt fortunate to attract an outstanding office staff, and enjoyed working with the friendly and capable personnel at St. Joseph Hospital where he did most of his surgery.
Jerry occasionally traveled to Central America and South America to lecture, operate, or help train surgical residents. In 1996 he literally sailed away, lived on a small sloop and explored the east coast of the U.S., northwest coast of Cuba, and the Yucatan peninsula. Settled in North Carolina and taught English as a Second Language in a community college and worked as an English/Spanish medical interpreter at a hospital in Asheville. He became homesick for the Maine Coast and returned in 2003.
He leaves a son, Andrew, in Massachusetts and grandson, Paddy, living in Ireland as well as a son, Geoffrey, living in Sweden. His band of brothers includes David of East Greenbush, N.Y., and Paul of Blacksburg, Va. He is survived by his loving wife, Joan Yeaton R.N.
Private family services will take place this spring at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Bangor. Wiles Remembrance Center of Farmington is honored to be caring for Dr. Metz where family and friends are invited to visit his Book of Memories at http://www.wilesrc.com to leave words of sympathy, share a story or reflection.
