William J. Witherell Jr.
LEWISTON – William J. Witherell Jr., 78, of Wales, quietly passed Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2025, at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston after a brief illness. He was born on Oct. 15, 1946, in Lewiston, the son of William J. Witherell Sr. and Lucy (Clancy) Witherell. Bill was a dedicated elementary school teacher for his entire career. He not only supported his students, who loved his donut club, but he was always there to share a laugh or give a word of encouragement to a coworker. Many fondly recall how he would stop by their classrooms and start their day with his contagious laugh and words of wisdom. Following his retirement, Bill worked at Bragdon-Finley Funeral Home in Monmouth for several years, serving families during difficult times. He was also well known for his impeccable posture, moustache that was groomed to perfection, his love of birds, gardening, music and the best tan of the summer. Even when facing his own health challenges he had people laughing. Bill spent many summers with family at North Carolina beaches where he and his cousin, Luella, would have “tanning competitions” to see who could get the best tan during the week. He would spend hours on the beach listening to Patti LaBelle while soaking up the sun. Bill took great pride in his gardens at his home on the mountain, which at times were part of the area garden tours. He also enjoyed sharing his love and knowledge of gardening with others. He is survived by his cousins Luella Crane and Russell Clifford, nieces Kristin Crane, Holly Crane Watkins, Kelly Crane McDonald and nephews Travis Crane, Brian Clifford, Bill Clifford and many friends. He was predeceased by his parents and his partner Fred Pellerin. Messages of condolence may be sent to: http://www.finleyfuneralhome.com
A graveside service at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Sabattus will be announced at a later date.
Arrangements by BRAGDON-FINLEY FUNERAL HOME, 707 Main Street, Monmouth, Maine.
