George N. Zimbis
LEWISTON – George N. Zimbis, 79, of Lewiston, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 20, 2025, at Central Maine Medical Center due to heart failure and complications of Lupus.
He was born in New York City, N.Y. on April 14, 1945. He was the son of Nicholas G. Zimbis and Helen Barbalias Zimbis.
Educated in local schools, George graduated from the University of Maine in 1967 in Orono, and he also attended Boston University.
He served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War, and received an honorable discharge after being diagnosed with Lupus.
George was a lifelong member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. He was an avid chess player, a member of the U.S. Chess Federation, and enjoyed playing with his friends, especially Jim Landry and Scott Manili. George was a big fan of both the New England Patriots and the Boston Red Sox.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Wheeler Zimbis of Lewiston; his brother, John Zimbis of Lewiston, his sister, Katherine Theodorakos of Dover, Del.; and several cousins; and nieces.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Tammy Voisine for the exceptional and compassionate care she has provided to George over the past 18 years.

Services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 26, at 11 a.m., at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church on Hogan Road in Lewiston. The burial, which will include full military honors, will be held in the springtime, at Oak Hill Cemetery, in Auburn.
Arrangements are under the care of Albert and Burpee Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 253 Pine St., Lewiston, 782-7201.
