LEWISTON – Darlene Laura (Wheatley) Skidgell, born June 8, 1959, in Maryland, passed away peacefully on Feb. 22, 2025, in Maine. Darlene is survived by her husband, Raymond, sons, Eric and Jason (wife, Lauren), and grandchildren, Avery and Noah; Her brother Steven Poppish (wife, Janice), Diana LaRochelle, David Poppish (wife, Susan), and brother Gary Wheatley.
Darlene graduated from Oak Hill High School and, while raising two children, pursued and earned her LPN degree. Her compassion and dedication extended beyond her career as she served as a school board member and went on to coach the Litchfield Stingers, a youth softball team that placed second in the State of Maine.
A lover of the outdoors in her early years, Darlene enjoyed camping and summers in Old Orchard Beach. She also enjoyed making the 10-hour drive to visit her family in Maryland. She was known for her playful spirit, often telling Mainers that crab cakes were better than lobster rolls! Scrapbooking was another of her passions, where she preserved the memories of her loved ones.
Those who knew Darlene would describe her as a fighter and a cancer survivor. No matter how difficult the battle, she always showed up for her children’s sporting events, her friends, and family. Her strength, love, and unyielding spirit will be deeply missed.
In accordance with Darlene’s wishes, there will not be a formal wake or funeral. A celebration of life will be held in the spring, details to follow.
