The Lewiston High School drama club, Center Stage Ensemble, plans to present “Valjean” during the Maine Drama Festival, a regional one-act play competition at Skowhegan High School on March 8.
The one-act play centers around Jean Valjean (played by Claudio Cucubica), who was just released from prison after 19 years for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his family.
“It’s a story about how we care for one another,” said director Aimee Rose Ranger. “It’s a story about being given another chance.”
The bishop (played by Delanie Owen) has Madame Magloire (played by Emily Desrosiers) set a spot at the dinner table and make a bed for Valjean on his first night as a free man.
Eighteen students are involved in the production.
Lewiston will compete with drama clubs from 10 schools during the competition at Skowhegan High School for a chance to move on to the state final March 22 and 23 at Camden Hills Regional High School.
Ranger said that her students wanted an opportunity to perform more locally and will do so on April 5 at L/A Arts in downtown Lewiston. Showtime is 5:30 p.m. with a potluck dinner following the show.
