James Lewis Merrill
SOUTH PARIS – James “Jim” Merrill of South Paris passed away at home on Feb. 25, 2025, at the age of 90.
Jim was born to Henry and Mabel Slattery Merrill in South Paris on May 7, 1934. He spent his childhood on Hill Street with his brothers Jack and Roger.
After graduating from Paris High School, Jim spent a three-year stint in the U.S. Army as a field radio repairman. He returned home and eventually married the former Thelma Leach. They resided on Buckfield Road on a farm once owned by his grandfather, Roscoe Slattery, where he farmed the property and raised cattle, horses and chickens. He also ran a business repairing televisions and radios.
Jim’s favorite pastime was collecting and restoring antique automobiles and old tractors. He was always sure to be found at the Lions Club car shows and the Cruise Ins socializing with all his old friends. Many have passed now too, but some are still with us. He was certainly a fixture at these events as he and Thelma often displayed cars for many years. He and Thelma were members of the Maine Obsolete Automobile League (the MOALs) and the Paris Cape Historical Society.
Jim was well loved by all and could always be found at 9:30 a.m. in the morning having coffee with his friends and family. Jim was energetic throughout his life, from cutting timber, to walking trails through the woods on the property every day, to mingling with everyone at his 90th birthday party.
Jim was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Thelma; and his brother Jack.
Jim is survived by his brother, Roger; his son, Bruce and partner Matthew Bailey of Sabattus, Jack and his partner Linda Frechette of South Paris; and grandchildren Jacob and Paige.
The family would like to especially thank Andwell Health Care Services and all the fine professionals that visited Jim to help him remain at home during the final days of his journey.
There will be no services as were his wishes. Arrangements are under the care of Chandler Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, 45 Main St., South Paris. Online condolences may be shared with his family at http://www.chanlerfunerals.com
