I join the Maine Trust for Local News editorial board in condemning the recent actions of Rep. Laurel Libby of District 64 in attacking a transgender student.
There is no place in Maine for an attack upon a child by an adult. The attack in question is made more heinous because it is centered on a child’s gender identity, a most private matter. No adult, particularly a public official, should act in this way. Rep. Libby could have easily made clear her opposition to the participation of transgender students in sports without exposing a child to ridicule, embarrassment and harassment.
Rep. Libby should reflect upon her actions and apologize to the child and to her parents at once. She should also apologize to her colleagues and to the people of Maine for the disgrace that she has caused. Failing that, Rep. Libby should face any and all legal consequences for her actions, if any, with remedies as harsh as her actions are foul.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
