The Lewiston Evening Journal reported, at the top of its front page, that the advertising manager of the competing Lewiston Sun, Frank S. Hoy, had married stenographer Gladys Parker at her sister’s house in Bethel. Parker has been the private stenographer of L.B. Costello, business manager of the Sun.
Efforts were made to keep the news of the wedding secret until Friday. They are now on a wedding tour to Montreal and other parts of Canada.
The story ran on a Thursday, scooping the Sun.

A rare political occurrence took place today at the State House. Gov. James B. Longley and Rep. Louis Jalbert, D-Lewiston, agreed on an issue.
They agreed that the Department of Mental Health and Corrections is overstaffed, expenses are too high for the dwindling population in state mental institutions, and something – possibly a layoff – should be done about it.

Homeowners along Main Street [in Auburn] picketed Saturday afternoon against the city’s decision to take part of their back lawns by eminent domain, warning passersby that their property could be city hall’s next target.
An estimated 75 friends and relatives joined neighbors in protesting the city’s plan to take nearly half the property of some landowners to make way for a paved walkway along the Androscoggin River.
The neighbors acknowledge the chances are slim that the city will reverse its decision and hope now only to get a fair price for their land.
