Hazen M. McMullen

NEW PORTLAND – Hazen M. McMullen, 84, died March 22, 2025. Hazen was born in Kingfield, Maine, the son of Murray and Dorothy (Smith) McMullen. He graduated from Kingfield High School in 1958.

Hazen married his wife Catherine on July 8, 1995, and they enjoyed many years living in their home in New Portland. He started his career training as a heavy equipment mechanic and operator. In 1965 he joined Sugarloaf Corporation as the first Gondola lift supervisor and worked his way to Vice President of operations. After 15 years with Sugarloaf, he moved on in 1980 to become the Service Manager of Kassbohrer of North America, Inc. in Gray, Maine. Throughout the 17 years at Kassbohrer he became Sales Manager, Vice President and the President and Chief Executive Officer. After retiring and leaving Kassbohrer in 1997, he continued to enjoy himself operating heavy equipment. He summarized his life as always working with nuts, bolts, grease, oil, mud, dirt, snow and ice.

He was an avid hunter and enjoyed heading to camp in the fall with his friends. He also loved taking long hikes in the woods any time of the year and snowmobiling in the winter. He loved flying and held a single engine commercial land and sea pilot’s license. Hazen was a 50-year member and Past Master of Mt. Abram Lodge #204 AF&AM Masons in Kingfield. He was also a past member of the New Portland Lion’s Club, Kingfield Health Council, suppliers committee to the National Ski Area Association and a board member for Sugarloaf Mountain Corporation. He was inducted into the Maine Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame in 2021.

He is survived by his wife, Catherine of New Portland; daughters, Rhonda Cassum and husband Chris of Clifton, Kelly Steward and husband Kevin of Lincoln and Cathy Fitzhenry and husband Sterling of Cutler; brother, Mahlon and wife Nancy of Scarborough; grandchildren, Cara Oleksyk, Devan Oleksyk, Mariah Cassum and Kelsey Keim; great grandchildren, Oakley Dorr, Ashley Dorr, and Lily Keim; and several nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

Hazen was predeceased by his father, Murray McMullen and mother, Dorothy (Smith) McMullen; and his stepson, Daniel Langill.

A private family burial will be held at Sunnyside Cemetery in Kingfield.
