DEAR SUN SPOTS: A few weeks ago, someone was looking for line dancing lessons (March 3 Sun Spots). I learned recently that these lessons are taught at the Franco Center on Wednesday mornings. I hope this information is helpful. — Keith, no town
ANSWER: Thanks, Keith! I looked that up and yes, every Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. the production manager, Jake Hodgkin, gives line dancing lessons in Heritage Hall. The class is $5 per person and everyone is welcome. There is no need to pre-register and walk-ins are welcome.
I also want to add that the Franco Center always needs volunteers to support their robust programs. Serve on the Event Crew (ushers, will-call ticket window, concession sales, clean-up); help with mass mailings and other clerical tasks; dust and clean history exhibits; give tours on Tuesdays and Wednesdays between 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.; lead tours for school children; and help with the library including genealogy resources.
If you are over 18 years of age and interested in volunteering, call 689-2000 or go to https://francocenter.org/volunteer-at-the-franco-center/ to fill out the volunteer application form.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: I moved to the area recently and am considering volunteering on weekends. I already volunteer at a soup kitchen a few times a month and want to also use some of my free time to do something a little different. — No name, Lewiston
ANSWER: You seem like a person who likes to keep busy. The opportunity above may be right for you, or you may want to check out the Public Theater. To find out more, go to https://thepublictheatre.org/volunteer/ or call 782-2211. You can join a committee, distribute posters, usher, sell concessions, or even work backstage during productions. Doesn’t this sound fun?
Other organizations in the immediate area that come to mind are Andwell Hospice Thrift Store in Auburn (https://andwell.org/get-involved/volunteer/), Literacy Volunteers Androscoggin (https://www.literacyvolunteersandro.org/howyoucanhelp.html ), and Greater Androscoggin Humane Society (https://gahumane.org/get-involved/volunteer/ .)
Give some thought to what you like doing, the skill set you want to share, and even the experience you’d like to gain.
