NEWRY — Dave Bartlett is a select board candidate against Suzanne Wight. They are vying for Gary Wight’s seat. The election will be held at Newry Town Meeting on May 13 at 6 p.m. at Bear River Grange.
Here are Bartlett’ answers to the questions posed:
Why are you seeking the select board nomination?
I am seeking select board nomination in the Town of Newry to ensure full transparency within our local government and bring our citizens together collaboratively to create a robust sense of community and togetherness.
What do you think are some important issues facing the Town of Newry?
Some of the important issues facing our town currently are:
1.) The cost of education
2.) Household waste & construction debris
3.) Resident property taxes
The cost of education is concerning as Newry residents pay a high cost for 27 students to attend SAD #44 school district. With costs rising each year we should be cautious and encourage our residents to voice their concerns during budget negotiations.
Household waste and construction debris continue to be a high cost to the town considering there are two other towns sharing our transfer station and we should consider looking into other vendors for Newry residents.
As resident property taxes continue to rise due to increased costs of groceries, gas, oil, etc the average person is losing ground financially. We need to take a deep dive into our finances and budget to see where we can cut back, get creative and take suggestions from our residents while working collaboratively and transparently with all.
Does Newry overspend or underspend and, where should reductions/increases be ?
I believe Newry is doing a good job with keeping expenses down but there is always room for improvement within the buckets listed above.
What is your experience with community organizations, and have you held positions in any organizations?
I started my public service in the early 1990’s when I sat on the committee to explore the withdrawal from SAD #44. I have served on the Newry planning board for about 10yrs. I was appointed by Governor LePage to serve on the State of Maine Board of Certified Water Operators, which regulated water license operator issues. I was voted in roughly 6yrs ago to replace Selectman Jim Largess on the Board of Selectman as he vacated the position. I am currently on the Board of Directors for SAD #44 and have been for the last 8yrs.
What town board positions have you held?
Newry Withdrawal Committee
Board of Water Operators for State of Maine
Newry Board of Selectman
SAD #44 School Board of Directors
