To the Editor:
My name is Mason Labonte, and I am a student at Spruce Mountain High School and the Foster Career and Technical Education Center. I am writing to express my unwavering support for LD 1740, An Act to Establish the Maine Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics Matching Grant Program. This bill is not just important to me — it represents the kind of opportunity that has shaped my life and can do the same for countless other students across Maine.
My journey in STEAM education began with three years in FIRST LEGO League during middle school. This experience ignited my passion for hands-on learning and problem-solving. In high school, I joined our FIRST Robotics team, where I have been actively involved for the past three years. Through robotics, I have gained invaluable skills such as bookkeeping, public speaking, securing funding, and team leadership. These experiences have not only enhanced my technical abilities but also prepared me for real-world challenges.
Robotics opened doors to other interests as well. I became involved in our school’s One Act drama team, serving as the stage manager for both musicals and plays over the past two years, after initially working as a sound technician. These roles taught me the importance of organization, communication, and collaboration — skills that are essential in any field.
Recognizing the value of practical skills, I enrolled in the Business Academy at the Foster Career and Technical Education Center. Here, I am learning personal finance, marketing, accounting, and computer applications. These courses are directly building upon the foundation laid by my experiences in robotics and theater, equipping me with a comprehensive skill set for the future.
Since my freshman year, I have also volunteered as a judge at Maine’s state-level FIRST LEGO League competitions. Supporting younger students in their STEAM journeys has been incredibly rewarding, and I am committed to helping them access the same opportunities that have been so influential in my life.
LD 1740 aims to establish a matching grant program to expand STEAM education across Maine. This initiative is crucial for providing students with access to programs that foster innovation, creativity, and practical skills. I firmly believe that investing in STEAM education is investing in the future of our state.
I urge everyone who cares about the education and development of our youth to take action. Please contact your state representatives and senators to express your support for LD 1740. Your voice can make a difference in ensuring that all students have the opportunity to benefit from the transformative power of STEAM education.
