DEAR SUN SPOTS: In the column, “Looking Back,” in 50 Years Ago Today, regarding Roland Dube Jr. shooting a deputy sheriff and escaping, at that time, I was a Lewiston Police Detective working with Detective Lieutenant Norm Poulin.

There had been an armed bank robbery on Main St. at Montello St. We worked on the case, and had gone to Oxford County to check out a car that someone thought might have been the getaway car, but it wasn’t.

On the way back to Lewiston, it came to me that earlier that week, a woman had told me about Roland Dube, who had recently gotten out of jail after having committed a bank robbery years before in Auburn.

With that in mind, we drove over to the Auburn Police Department and asked them to pull the file on that case. It had the note that Dube had left at the Auburn bank. The note we had from the Lewiston bank was nearly the same. We got a positive ID of Dube then secured a warrant of arrest.

Dube was caught coming off a plane in Hawaii. That was my first bank robbery that I cleared. Fifty years ago — I’m getting old.

I wanted to add that in the “Looking Back” 25 Years Ago Today column, Norm Guay arrested a man at an Auburn City Council meeting. Norm and I were childhood friends who lived around the corner from each other. — Larry, Florida

ANSWER: The above reminiscence was written and sent to us by Lewiston’s former mayor, Larry Gilbert. We thought it was interesting. Perhaps he should write a collection of his adventures. What do you all think?

Remember, Sun Spots is a perfect place to share your memories of L-A and western Maine. We love reading them!

DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Annual Androscoggin Watershed Conference at the Auburn Senior Community Center, 48 Pettengill Park, is scheduled for May 13 from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Two highlights are worth noting. Dana Osgood, one of NewsCenter Maine’s meteorologists, will present information from the station’s series, “Maine’s Changing Climate.” We will also have a hands-on “Stream Table” demonstration provided by Maine Audubon, showing how severe storms can impact our infrastructure and destroy fish habitat.

The conference will include sessions on historic flooding in Oxford County, hazard mitigation, the importance of brook trout to our economy and the environment, standards for design of stream crossings, fishing guides perspectives on angling on the Androscoggin and its tributaries, and climate change and Maine’s planning effort to mitigate future impacts. For more information and for registration, go to www.androscogginwatershed.org. or call 240-3143.–Ferg, Poland

ANSWER: This sounds very interesting! I’m sure all your attendees will learn valuable information and enjoy the discussions.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Why aren’t the stock pages in the paper anymore? — Bob, Norway

ANSWER: Considerable changes have had to be made as we move forward. We are focusing more on stories about local people, events, and issues that are of greater interest to a wider audience.
