LEWISTON — Dozens of tenants were evacuated from their Picker House Loft apartments Thursday afternoon after a carbon monoxide leak was discovered inside the building.
Lewiston fire crews were called to the apartment complex at 6 Cedar St. shortly after 2 p.m. They were still ventilating the building at 3:30 p.m. as tenants milled around in the parking lot.
Lewiston fire Chief Mark Caron said they responded to a carbon monoxide alarm and found “very high levels” of the gas inside the building.
One woman said she had just started to fall asleep in her apartment on an upper floor when a firefighter knocked on her door and advised her to clear out. Shortly after, she said, alarms started sounding throughout the building.
No one was reported hurt as tenants filed out of the building. The newly refurbished building houses 72 apartments, although it was not immediately clear how many of them were occupied when the leak was discovered.
A building contractor was assisting fire crews at the scene as the investigation continued Thursday afternoon.
