Timothy Andrew Carter

BETHEL – Timothy Andrew Carter passed away peacefully on Monday, March 31, 2025, in Bethel, at his home with his eldest daughter, Rebecca Carter, and son, John Carter, at his side. He was 83-years-old. Born in Greenwood, to Fern Lyndell Carter and Thomas Richard Carter on April 11, 1941, Timothy was raised on the family farm on Middle Intervale Road, where his father mentored him in logging and farming. After graduating from Gould Academy and earning a degree in Agricultural Sciences from The University of Maine, Orono in 1964, he returned to his roots. He proudly continued his family’s legacy as a 6th-generation farmer from 1967 to 1994. Timothy was deeply committed to serving both his country and his community. His dedication to public service was evident in his many roles, including First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, school board member, Farm Bureau member, and state representative with the National Milk Producers Federation. He continued his civic engagement as the Northeast Regional Director of the USDA and later as a member of the Maine House of Representatives. Among his many accomplishments, Timothy was a founding member of the Mahoosuc Land Trust, an organization devoted to conserving thousands of acres of globally significant forest in the Mahoosuc Region. A true outdoorsman at heart, Timothy cherished his time in nature pursuing various sports including cross-country running, hiking, cross-country skiing, white water canoeing, and fishing. His passion for outdoor activities inspired him to help organize several canoe races, including The Pole, Paddle, and Paw—a unique triathlon combining cross-country skiing, white water canoeing, and snowshoeing. Throughout his life, he fondly remembered his college cross-country running team and coach. Timothy is survived by his older brother, Thomas Carter, and sister-in-law Anne Carter; his loving wife of 58 years, Jo Ellen Carter; their three children: Rebecca Carter, John Carter, Nancy Schutt and her husband Jon; five grandchildren: Kendra Carter and her husband Matthew, Ella Carter, Adelaide Carter, Timothy Schutt, and Lily Schutt; and many beloved nieces and nephews. His parents, Richard and Lyndell Carter, and younger brothers, David Carter and Stephen Carter, preceded him in death. Timothy’s dedication to his family, community, and the land he lovingly tended will be remembered and cherished by all who knew him. A memorial service for Timothy will be held on June 22, 2025, at the Middle Intervale Meeting House starting at 10 a.m.
