Lloyd N. Martin
PORTLAND – Lloyd Nelson Martin died unexpectedly on April 29, 2025, in Portland.
Lloyd was born on Christmas Day in 1959. He was the only child of Conrad and Hilda (Cyr) Martin. Lloyd was raised in the Catholic Church and he was active in his faith throughout his life. Prayer was always a source of strength and comfort to him.
Lloyd grew up in Van Buren, and attended the local schools from kindergarten through high school, graduating in 1978. Even though Lloyd lived in other places, Van Buren was always home. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from Dartmouth College in 1982 and a Juris Doctor from the University of Maine School of Law in 1986. Lloyd had a long career practicing law in Lewiston. In recent years, he had moved to Portland and served as a Guardian ad litem, representing and advocating for Maine children and their families, helping them get the support and services they needed.
Lloyd had an active mind and was always learning. He enjoyed reading about current events, history, and military strategy, visiting museums, and watching documentaries. He also loved exploring new places, especially his trips to Spain and Italy. Lloyd’s other interests included following the New England sports teams, most notably his love/hate relationship with the Patriots. He was also a fan of the Celtics and Maine Black Bears hockey. He enjoyed hiking, playing basketball, and golfing; playing board and card games, including cribbage, poker, Risk, and Axis and Allies; and listening to a wide range of music. Lloyd relished a good conversation, and was always interested in finding out more about other people’s interests. He was a great listener, generous, and, above all, kind .
A proud father, Lloyd is survived by his cherished daughter, Emily Martin of Auburn, for whom he is very grateful; and by his beloved partner of many years, Margaret Gaertner of Portland. Dad, thank you for always encouraging me to try new things and to believe in myself, I will miss you. Lloyd, I am grateful to have your limitless love, constant support, intelligence, and sense of humor in my life.
He is also survived by his aunts Marguerite Cyr and Marietta Cyr of Hamlin; an extended family of many cousins; his lifelong friend, Guy Chasse of St. Augustine, Fla., his college friend, Mukul Rodrigues Kamat of Boston, and more friends than we can name.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 14, at St. Philip Church in Auburn followed by a gathering in the parish hall for family and friends to remember Lloyd at 11 a.m.
