Bridge Street in Gilead is inaccessible until mid-July. Rose Lincoln/Bethel Citizen

GILEAD — The bridge on Bridge Street in Gilead that runs over the Androscoggin River is being blasted and repainted by DOT contractors. The job was originally scheduled for 2024. It connects Route 2 in Gilead to North Road.

North Road residents and SAD-44 school busses have had to take alternative routes since mid-May when the work began.

The five to six week project should be completed around mid-July, depending on the weather. A contractor working at the job site said the new color will be “hospital green.” According to the Maine Department of Transportation the cost of the painting project is $1M.
