LEWISTON — More gunfire was reported Friday in downtown Lewiston when shots rang out on Blake Street just after 3 p.m.
Police who responded found spent shell casings in the street but no suspects were found and it appeared that no one had been struck.
One woman reported that she was in the car with her daughters when shots rang out around her.
“I just backed up, I didn’t know what to do and I just wanted to get away from it,” she wrote on Facebook. “Such a scary thing to go through. I was shaking so bad.”
The same woman reported that between 20 and 30 shots were fired and that it appeared that two groups of young people were exchanging gunfire. Other witnesses estimated the number of shots fired at between 8 and 12.
The shooting occurred in the area of 220 Blake St., not far from Mark M. Paradis Park, often populated by children in the afternoon.
Later Friday, police were still investigating the shooting, speaking with witnesses at the scene and reviewing surveillance camera footage from a variety of sources.
By 5 p.m., no arrests had been made.
The shots fired on Blake Street follow reports of gunfire at Hillview Apartments on Rideout Avenue earlier in the week.
Police on Friday conducted what they described as a “high risk search warrant” at an apartment at Hillview, although they did not disclose who they were after or if anyone was arrested.
It was not known if there were any links between the two shootings. The downtown has been vexed with frequent reports of gunfire all summer long, including two in the area of a Bartlett Street mosque in June and July.
