Stephen Vermette
LEWISTON – It is with profound sadness that I announce the passing of Stephen Vermette, 74, of Lewiston, who left us on May 28, 2025, after a brief illness. The silence he leaves behind is deep, yet the love and memories we shared will forever resonate in the heart of his devoted wife, Claire.
Stephen was Claire’s best friend, lover, and companion; she adored him completely. He was known by many as “Oobo”. He was a man of quiet passions and immense dedication. He was one of the first persons enrolled in the University of Maine, then he went to The Criminal Justice Academy, later becoming a police officer in Auburn. Stephen found great joy in the world of computers and was deeply involved in ham radio, ever the communicator. He particularly cherished their evenings out, simply enjoying dinner together, and he was unwavering in his commitment to supporting their local community.
One of Stephen’s proudest endeavors was his dedication to the Military Auxiliary Radio System (MARS) program. He poured his time and expertise into this Department of Defense-sponsored initiative, using his ham radio skills to provide vital supplemental communication capabilities for the military. It was a testament to his selfless spirit and his desire to serve.
Stephen was predeceased by his parents, Norman Vermette and Johanne (Kirkpatrick) Vermette; and his twin brother.
He is survived by his loving wife, Claire Vermette; his children, Paul Vermette, Deborah Vermette, and Rebecca Vermette; and their cherished grandchildren, Chelsea, Emma, Jonathan, and Madison. He will be missed more than words can express by all who knew and loved him.
Claire’s heart aches with his absence, but she is incredibly grateful for every moment they shared—every laugh, every quiet evening. Stephen was, and always will be, the special person who made her life complete.
A Chapel service will be held at St. Peters Cemetery, Lewiston on Saturday Aug. 16 at 10:30 a.m.
