Jean Phyllis Williams
BRUNSWICK – Jean Phyllis Williams passed away peacefully on Aug. 2, 2025, surrounded by her loved ones. Known affectionately as “Garmie,” Jean was a remarkable woman whose life was defined by devotion, gratitude, and love for her family. She was especially grateful to spend her final days back in Maine, where she enjoyed heartfelt visits and calls from family and friends.
Jean was born on Nov. 24, 1930, in Derby, Connecticut. She spent her early years in Clinton, Conn., before moving with her family to Mechanic Falls. There she attended high school and went on to graduate from Farmington Teachers College. In August 1952, she married Frank Williams, and together they made their home in Mechanic Falls, raising three children surrounded by cats, dogs, and an ever-changing assortment of farm animals.
Once her children were raised, Jean joined the staff at Elm Street School, where she taught fourth grade for 27 years. She touched the lives of hundreds of children with her kindness, patience, and dedication. After retiring from teaching, and following Frank’s passing, Jean embraced what she often called her favorite role in life – being “Garmie.” Her family liked to say that if you looked up “grandmother” in the dictionary, you’d find her picture.
Summers on Westport Island were her happiest times – baking cookies, making blueberry pancakes, playing cards and board games, and welcoming family and friends with open arms. These memories will forever be treasured by those who knew and loved her.
Jean was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Frank; her twin sister, Joan; brother, Ken; sister, Barbara; and her parents, Walter and Annie Midgley. She is survived by her children Peter (Sharon), Cindy (Ken), and Jonathan; grandchildren Sarah (Michael), Ally (Jake), Meg (Ryan), Ben (Courtney), Nathaniel (Celeste), James, Andrew, and Matthew; and great-grandchildren Elisabeth, Juliette, Arthur, Frankie, William, Calvin, Hannah, and a great-granddaughter soon to arrive. Each will carry forward the love, joy, and example she shared so freely.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, August 15, at Maple Grove Cemetery in Mechanic Falls, with a celebration of life to follow.
