Allen W. Messer
POLAND – Allen W. Messer, 80, of Poland, passed away peacefully on June 14, 2021, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on July 25, 1940, in York, Maine the middle child of Carroll and Margaret Messer.
When Allen was four years old, the family moved to Eliot. He graduated from Eliot High School and started college at Gorham State Teachers College that fall. There he met Stella Perkins, and they married in 1960. They enjoyed 61 wonderful years of marriage.
Allen worked in the education field for 17 years in various areas within the state both as a teacher and a principal. During that time he achieved a master’s degree.
On a whim he applied for a job working for the Hatchery Division for the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife eventually becoming the foreman. Allen truly loved his job as it was an opportunity to visit many areas of the state while stocking fish by truck, boat, or plane. He held this job for 20 years, retiring in 2000.
After Allen retired, he and Stella moved to Poland where he had a fulfilling life enjoying the company of family and friends, staying busy with home projects, church, fishing and hunting. During the winter months he enjoyed tying fly fishing flies. He was an avid reader and had a large collection of Maine books. He thoroughly enjoyed sharing his knowledge of all things Maine with his children and grandchildren.
Allen was so committed to being an outdoorsman that he purchased lifetime hunting and fishing licenses for each of his great grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Stella (Perkins), son, Keith (Joanne), son, Wayne (David), daughter, Kim (Glenn), six grandchildren, Joel, Katie, Sonja, Valerie, Olivia, and Margo and six great grandchildren. Also surviving him are his brother, Tom and sister, Ann, as well as many special friends.
