DIXFIELD — Crews from several towns were battling a woods fire late Friday afternoon in the area of Canton Point Road.

A Maine Forestry helicopter was brought in to help battle the flames, said to be covering between one and two acres in the area of the Canton Mountain Wind Project.

About 5 p.m., Canton fire crews went out to the area of Walsh Lane for reports of fire. Soon after, Dixfield fire crews responded with equipment.

Early reports were that the blaze was near the power lines running from the Canton Mountain Wind Project.

Rumford fire crews also responded with drones to help zero in on the fire, which was said to be moving down the mountain toward Canton Point Road.

Those who live in that area said they could both see and smell smoke about 5:45 p.m. They could also spot the Forest Service helicopter flying low over the wind turbines.

Canton firefighters were attempting to douse the flames from the ground about 6 p.m. with assistance from the Forest Service helicopter, which was said to be scooping up water from the Androscoggin River.

By 6:30 p.m., the fire was said to be under control and crews from Jay and Buckfield were being called in to help with mop up operations.
