VIEW THE ART OF LAJOS MATOLCSY

NORWAY — For the first time in 19 years there will be a major retrospective art exhibit of fine art by professor Lajos Matolcsy, who died in 1982. Presented by the Western Maine Art Group, the exhibit will feature some well-known and never-before-seen work and archives from private collections.

A free public reception Oct. 3 from 5-7 p.m. will kick off the monthlong exhibit at the Lajos Matolcsy Arts Center, 480 Main St. The exhibit will be open to the public Fridays and Saturdays from noon to 3 p.m. throughout the month.

Matolcsy was a celebrated and prolific artist who settled in the Norway area and dedicated his life to sharing his art through teaching and by founding the Western Maine Art Group in 1962. He also founded the summertime Norway Sidewalk Art Show in 1967 (now the Norway Maine Arts Festival) with the help of his wife and dance teacher, Claire Couri, and some dedicated students. He went on to open teaching studios in Norway, Casco, Lewiston and Portland.

The exhibit will be filled with examples of his work in pen and ink, oil, watercolor, colored pencil, block prints, including graphic designs, sketches, carvings, weavings and more.

START THE WEEK WITH FINNISH FIDDLERS

Finnish fiddlers Tero Hyväluoma and Esko Järvelä, who perform as Teho, are scheduled to play Wednesday, Oct. 1, at North Paris Homestead, 2 Abbott Hill Road in West Paris.

WEST PARIS — Finnish fiddlers Tero Hyväluoma and Esko Järvelä, who perform as Teho, will appear Wednesday, Oct. 1, at 7 p.m. at North Paris Homestead.

Promoters said Teho “combines fluently Finnish traditional fiddling, Norwegian halling, Swedish polska, bebop, Western swing, and composed contemporary folk music. Improvisation plays also big part of the duo’s sound.”

The two musicians are well known in the Nordic folk music field. They have played together for years in various bands and on numerous projects, including one of the most well-known Finnish folk bands, Frigg.

WALK TO END ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE

LEWISTON — On Saturday, Oct. 4, from 9 a.m. to noon, the Walk to End Alzheimer’s —Lakes & Mountains will take place at Simard-Payne Memorial Park at 46 Beech St.

The walk is the largest fundraising event for Alzheimer’s care and support in the Androscoggin County area.

THIS’LL BE THE DAY … YOU SEE BUDDY HOLLY

Buddy Holly: Rave On! will be presented Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 4 and 5, at the Donald M. Gay Performing Arts Center, 77 Harris St. in Auburn.

AUBURN — On Saturday and Sunday, the Maine State Music Theatre will present its third and final show in its seasonal satellite series at the Donald M. Gay Performing Arts Center with “Buddy Holly: Rave On!”

The show will take the audience on a musical journey through the songs of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper in this heartfelt tribute to the artists. All three died in a plane crash Feb. 3, 1959, in Iowa.

Shows are Saturday, Oct. 4, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 5, at 2 p.m.

LISTEN TO ONE OF SCOTLAND’S BEST

im Malcolm will perform Saturday, Oct. 4, at the Old South Church, 235 Main St. in Farmington.

FARMINGTON — The Old South Church Concert Series will welcome one of Scotland’s best singer/songwriters on Saturday, Oct. 4, when Jim Malcolm will perform.

“Malcolm is the ultimate Scots troubadour. Traveling the world with his guitar, harmonicas and engaging wit, he sings the traditional songs of Scotland and his own masterfully crafted songs in a style which is modern and accessible, yet utterly authentic,” according to organizers.

Malcolm was lead singer with the multi-award-winning Old Blind Dogs for eight years, taking him to the most prestigious festivals in North America and around Europe.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. with the concert at 7 p.m. General admission is $25. Seniors (65+) $20. Students (12 years +/college ID required) $15. Children under 12 admissed free. WATCH ORIGINAL DANCE UNFURL IN FARMINGTON

The Droplet Dance Co. will present FERN on Saturday, Oct. 4, at the Emery Community Arts Center on Academy Street in Farmington.

FARMINGTON — A night of original dance set to music will take place at the Emery Community Arts Center, Saturday, Oct. 4, when Droplet Dance Co. presents FERN.

Hosted by ArtsFarmington and performed by dancers Molly Gawler and Shana Bloomstein, and pianist Shepsi Eaton, FERN is inspired by the unfurling spirals of the fern plant.

Gawler, a former principal dancer with the world-renowned dance troupe Pilobulus, will bring everything from modern dance, to ballet, to circus and mime to the stage. Bloomstein is a ballet dancer who inspires her work with a “spiritual and magical aura,” according to organizers. All dances in the show are original choreography by Gawler and Bloomstein. Eaton will hold the musical threads together with pieces on piano, original songs and reggae-style guitar beats. 

The show runs from 7-8:30 p.m. Emery Community Arts Center is on Academy Street at the University of Farmington.

TURN A PAGE WITH A PUP

JAY — On Saturday, Oct. 4, readers of all ages are encouraged to head to the Niles Memorial Library from 10:30-11:30 a.m. to read with some therapy dogs.

The dogs will be provided by Love on a Leash. The event is free and open to the public. No sign-up needed. Drop in anytime between 10:30-11:30 a.m.

The event recurs the first Saturday of the month. The library is at 983 Main St.

GET SOME REAL BAM! AT BAAM, PLUS MICHELLE YEOH

Roger Clark Miller and Terry Donahue will perform Friday, Oct. 3, as The Anvil Orchestra at The Gem Theater, 48 Cross St. in Bethel.

BETHEL — Fresh and creepy for the Halloween season, The Anvil Orchestra will perform a live score to the classic German Expressionist horror film “The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari” on Saturday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m. at The Gem Theater, 48 Cross St.

“If there ever was a film for Halloween (or any time one wants to leave the rational world far, far behind), this is it. The Anvil Orchestra’s score is atmospheric, layered with a creepy other-worldly feel that matches the extreme visuals. Performances of this film have garnered rave reviews. From the Roger Ebert Film Festival: ‘This is the best score you have ever done,'” event promotors said.

The 1920 film is unrated, and considered my many the first true horror movie.

The Anvil Orchestra is Roger Clark Miller and Terry Donahue. Miller has released over 50 albums and his chamber music has been performed at the New England Conservatory, Tufts University, and other venues. Donahue has long been fascinated by “found sound,” leading to him being an integral part of Boston’s percussion scene as a founding member of the Concussion Ensemble, Alloy Orchestra, Zero Zero and Arcade Ambo. The two have performed individually and collectively all over the world.

Then, on Monday, Oct. 6, Bethel Arts and Music will present the second film in its four-part Michelle Yeoh Film Series. This series celebrates the career of Michelle Yeoh, “whose groundbreaking performances have redefined action cinema, expanded representation for Asian actors on the global stage, and showcased her versatility across genres — from martial arts epics to award-winning dramas,” organizers said.

The Oct. 6 film will be “Memoirs of a Geisha.” On Monday, Oct. 20, “The Heroic Trio” will run. And on Monday, Nov. 3, “Everything Everywhere All At Once” will screen. All films are at 6 p.m. Social hour starts at 5 p.m.

WATCH McGHEE AND LIBBEY IN SHORTS

Scintillating Shorts are coming to the Denmark Arts Center on Saturday, Oct. 4, performed by actors Robert Libbey and Lynne McGhee.

DENMARK — On Saturday, Oct. 4, the Denmark Arts Center will present Scintillating Shorts, what organizers are describing as “hilarious comedy scenes and short plays … (by) emerging new playwrights and critically acclaimed dramatists.”

The works, “from a bee in search of a queen to an absurd encounter with a puppet,” will be directed by Stan Burgoyne and star Lynne McGhee and Robert Libbey.
