DEAR SUN SPOTS: I want readers to know about a local treasure located at 160 Church Hill Road in Leeds (yellow Grange building next to Russell Medical Center). This thrift store is organized and well-stocked with lots of clothing for all ages and sizes, household goods, sewing and craft materials, toys and holiday decorations.

There are several rooms of “good stuff” at very affordable prices.

All sales benefit the food pantry and other Deacons’ projects to help those in need in the Leeds community. Donations of used but still usable items are accepted on Wednesday mornings.

At this time of year, the center is open on Saturday mornings from 8:30-11 a.m. — No name, Leeds

ANSWER: This is a very well-run thrift store with incredible bargains and new items arriving all the time.

The food pantry, which the store supports, serves between 25-40 families in the Leeds community a month on-site. Call the church at 524-5444 for more information or go to http://www.homelessshelterdirectory.org/cgi- in/id/foodbank.cgi?foodbank=9229

Local school children in need are provided with ready-to-eat meals as part of the weekend backpack program. Baskets for families and individuals are given out around Thanksgiving and Christmas.

I want to add that the Leeds Community Church at 123 Church Hill Road invites the community to join them on Saturday, Oct. 25, from 3-6 p.m. for an afternoon of family fun. There will be decorated trunks, snacks, activities and even more festivities in the gym. All children are welcome to participate.

They are looking for community members and small local businesses to host a trunk or table and pass out candy, and candy, toy, craft, and Halloween trinket donations to help make the event extra sweet for the trick-or-treaters.

If you’d like to participate or donate, please or call the church at 524-5444 or email [email protected]. Ami Merrick is the person to ask for. Your support is appreciated in making this event a success.

If you have a favorite thrift store you wish to mention in Sun Spots, or know of one that needs on-going donations and volunteers, let me know.
