Emergency crews responded to a couple of locations Tuesday afternoon after a blown transformer caused at least two fires in Paris.

After a transformer blew at 227 Main St. about 2 p.m., sparks reportedly set hay bales on fire in front of Paris Farmers Union.

As fire crews made their way to that scene, another fire was reported on Charles Street, a short distance away.

While fire crews dealt with those scenes, power outages were reported across the area.

Several residents reported either flickering lights or a loss of power at their homes in the moments after the transformer blew.

Lights at Walmart on Route 26 we reported out about 2:30 p.m. Other area business owners took to social media to report power outages.

By 3 p.m., roughly 3,500 Paris homes and businesses were without power. Another 2,500 were reported without power in Buckfield, Hebron, Oxford, Greenwood and South Paris, although it was not immediately clear if those outages were related to the transformer issue in Paris.

Shortly after 5 p.m., Central Maine Power’s website said electrical service had been fully restored in the area.

Note: This story has been updated to reflect that the fires happened at 227 Main St. in Paris.
