Yung T. Szal

BANGOR – Yung T. Szal, 42, died unexpectedly on Sept. 16, 2025 in Bangor. He was born in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam on Dec. 8, 1982.

Yung came to the United States when he was adopted at the age of 7. He attended Auburn Schools, and graduated from Edward Little High School. While in high school, he enjoyed playing soccer, earned a black belt in karate, and became an Eagle Scout. He also enjoyed swimming and skiing.

While in high school, he became interested in culinary arts, and worked in that field, first in the Lewiston-Auburn area, including Bates College, and then in Bangor.

Yung was a gentle soul. He was an outgoing person, quick with a smile, and ready to help anyone in need. He volunteered as a lifeguard, and joined the local Red Cross. During hurricane Katrina, he went to Louisiana and Texas with the Red Cross to help survivors. He took great pride in his cooking, and would often bring a special something to family gatherings.. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his 11 year old son, Jace, and was very proud of him.

He is survived by his son, Jace Szal; parents Cecile and Bruce Szal; sister, Beth Knell and husband Trevor; and cousins Adam and Asa from Monmouth. He is also survived by his longtime companion, Elizabeth Scott and her son Harry, of Bangor.

A Celebration of Yung’s life will be held at a future date.
