“Federal (authorities) named the Auburn to Portland rail trail a ‘high-speed rail corridor’ Wednesday, boosting the chances of extending passenger service to the Twin Cities. The announcement by the U.S. Department of Transportation makes the rail spur eligible for as much as $5 million in money aimed at upgrading tracks and crossings. The move could conceivably bring Amtrak to Auburn within two years.”
