“Ice formed to a thickness of half an inch in places last night. The leaves are rapidly dropping and the earth is beautifully carpeted. The ground froze somewhat last night and this morning, the earth was white with frost.”

“Blue skies smiling on John Sullivan’s great Pageant of Progress at the Armory today; thousands of people waiting for the evening program; hundreds in the early hours of the afternoon, keeping door tenders busy, indicated that all records would go smash when John finally locks his office up after midnight and goes home to tell his four boys the latest tidings at the hospital where his four-days-old twins are progressing in the first phase of the Pageant of Life.”

“Maine’s fight fans get an extra treat Thursday when the Auburn Police Athletic League brings boxing back to the Lewiston Armory. Former world champion Willie Pep and long-time Maine boxing star Al ‘Shiner’ Couture will tangle in a special bout. … Both are retired from active fighting, but Pep says he’s still in fine shape, and doubts that Shiner can lay a glove on him.”

“Divers Friday discovered a tire iron police say was used to assault a cab driver last weekend. A 17-year-old charged with robbery in the case was arrested earlier this week but another suspect remains at large.”
