Donald G. Bennett
BETHEL – Ret. LTC Donald G. Bennett, 91, of Bethel, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2025.
He was born on Oct. 10, 1934, in Arlington, Mass., the son of Harold G. and Evelyn (Crosby) Bennett. In 1945, his family moved to Bethel after purchasing his grandfather’s dairy farm—later known as Riverside Dairy Farm.
Don graduated from Gould Academy in 1952, ranking at the top of his class and playing football. His distinguished military career began in the Army Reserves and became a 22-year commitment to Army Intelligence, serving his country with honor and dedication.
He was stationed across the United States and internationally, including tours in Korea, Germany, Vietnam (twice), and England, concluding his service at the Pentagon in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. He earned a master’s degree and was awarded multiple honors, including: Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit and Bronze Star Medals (three).
In 1965, Don married the love of his life, Katherine (Larsen) Bennett, whom he met through their shared love of art. After retiring from the Army in 1977, they settled in Bethel in 1978.
Don launched several community-minded businesses and projects: DGB Advertising and Frames, promoting local tourism and custom picture framing services; Red House Management, offering customized computer programs and systems for local businesses; and The Bethel Journals, an online archive preserving local history. He also worked at the Bethel Inn, where he modernized operations and led front desk services.
Don was a passionate civic leader, serving with the Chamber of Commerce, Bethel Water District, United Way, Bethel Historical Society, Maine Tourism Association, and veterans’ organizations. His work was recognized with the Spirit of America Foundation Award, presented by members of the Maine State Senate and House of Representatives.
He was an artist, photographer, model train enthusiast, and historian. Most of all, he cherished time with his family—especially his grandsons.
Don was predeceased by his wife, Katherine; and his parents.
He is survived by his daughter, Apryl Blais and her husband Beau Blais; grandchildren, Jeremy Samala (wife LeighAnn), and Ashton Samala, step-grandchildren, Jacob and Jayden Blais; and great-grandson, Myles Bennett Samala.
He will be remembered for his strength, intelligence, integrity, deep love for family, and lifelong service. He will forever remain in our hearts—gone but never forgotten. May he rest in peace.
A dual graveside burial service for both Donald and Katherine Bennett will be held on Saturday, Nov. 1, at 2 p.m. at Riverside Cemetery in Bethel. Arrangements are under the care of Chandler Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, 45 Main St., South Paris. Online condolences may be shared at http://www.chandlerfunerals.com
