WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Nancy J. Freeman, formerly of Bowdoin, Maine, passed away at her son’s home in Florida on Oct. 25, 2025, where she had been residing the previous two months. Born on June 26, 1947, she was 78 years old.

Nancy was the eldest of three children born to Laurent and Jeanne (Fournier) Brochu of Jay. She was educated in Jay schools and married Gary L. Freeman in 1971. After 54 years of marriage together, Gary predeceased her three months earlier, in July of this year.

Early in life, Nancy’s goal was to be a mother and homemaker. She raised three children and cared for several foster children. She had a heart that could easily be touched and was happiest when serving others. She cherished time with family, both immediate and extended, and enjoyed “cousin time” with great anticipation. Nancy was an excellent cook, enjoyed canning, sewing, knitting, and was a very talented quilter. She also worked numerous outside jobs, usually in food-prep or sewing-related positions.

Nancy and Gary made regular road trips, usually to Vermont or New Hampshire, but also to Upper State New York, Pennsylvania, Georgia, and Florida. She made four trips to Europe, during which time she traveled in seven different Western European countries. She was an active member of The Apostolic Church of Bath. Her Christian faith played a major role in her life, and she will be sadly missed by her church family.

Nancy is survived by her son, Shawn Freeman (life partner, Myra Cooper) of West Palm Beach, Fa; Michelle Carter (soulmate, Christopher Gates) of Steep Falls, and Darrin Freeman (wife, Karen) of Bowdoin; as well as two brothers, Dan Brochu (wife, Monica) of Wilton and Paul Brochu (wife, Darla) of Saint-Thibault-des-Vignes, France. She was “Grammy” to six grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Also holding a life-long place in Nancy’s heart was Regina Ritchie and son Parker Noleje.

Nancy was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Gary; and infant daughter, Lisa.

Family and friends are invited to pay their last respects on Monday, Nov. 3, from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Brackett Funeral Home, 29 Federal St., Brunswick, followed by a memorial service on site at 11 a.m. Interment will be at Bay View Cemetery, Bowdoinham.
