Geraldine “Geri” (Kraus) Leddy

BRUNSWICK – Geraldine “Geri” (Kraus) Leddy, 75, of Brunswick. and formerly a longtime resident of Bridgton, Maine, passed away peacefully at Avita of Brunswick.

Geraldine “Geri” was born in New Jersey on Dec. 10, 1949, the daughter of the late Gerald and Josephine Kraus. She graduated in 1967 from Hanover Park High School in Hanover, N.J. She went on to study Biology at the College of St. Elizabeth, N.J. She later achieved her Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from Boston College. Her courses of study reflect her absolute love of the natural and social sciences.

Geraldine was a dedicated social worker for many years. She spent time working with Tri-County Mental Health in South Paris and St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Lewiston. She provided inpatient and outpatient behavioral health services and held various management roles. She retired after maintaining a private social work practice out of her Bridgton home. She loved being a social worker and was deeply committed to helping adults from all walks of life.

Beyond her professional life, she was known for her curiosity and spirit of adventure. She was a naturalist, adventurer, photographer, and learner. It was not uncommon for Geri to call her daughters out of the blue to report the exact time and expected visibility of an upcoming meteor shower. She was enamored with the world around her—this included wildlife, the ocean, plants, bugs, rocks, and the gorgeous red earth of her favorite place, Sedona, Ariz. She was known for wearing a variety of unique hats that reflected her enjoyment of color and texture. These elements could also be found in her weaving and other fiber arts. She was no stranger to a pile of good books, a cup of tea with honey, African dance classes, yoga retreats, or a drum circle.

She was predeceased by her husband, David Thomas Leddy. She is survived by her sister, Loretta Kraus; two daughters, Rebecca (Handler) Engelmann and her husband Jens, Ruth (Handler) Joyce and her husband Darren; as well as five grandchildren, Raina (Handler) Gonsalves and her husband Forrest, Jacob Bailey, Tobi Engelmann, Renata Joyce, and Eli Joyce. She is also survived by one great-grandchild, Killian Gonsalves.

Geraldine’s Celebration of Life will be in Stetsons Funeral Home, 12 Federal St., Brunswick, on Friday, Nov. 14, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. with a time of reflection and prayers beginning at 4:30 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.
