Muriel Walker Myers

AUBURN – Muriel Walker Myers passed away peacefully on Nov. 3, 2025, at Schooner Memory Care in Auburn — five months shy of her 100th birthday.

Muriel was born on Easter Sunday, April 4, 1926, to Gladys and Frederick Walker and lived in Auburn throughout her childhood. She graduated from Edward Little High School in 1944. During her school years, she enjoyed singing, participating in plays, and cheering on her classmates as a cheerleader. Even at 98, she could gleefully recite the Edward Little cheer: “Come on red, come on white, come on Eddie’s, fight, fight, fight!”

Muriel cherished summers spent with her grandparents on Long Island in Georgetown, Maine, at the mouth of the Kennebec River, across from the fort. At their cottage, aptly named Paradise, she caught the attention of noted New York artist, Stephen Etnier, who asked her to model for more than 10 of his paintings.

After graduating from high school, Muriel attended Jackson College for Women at Tufts University and later graduated from the Katharine Gibbs School in 1946. An Auburn girl at heart, Muriel married Joelle C. Hiebert, Jr., a Lewiston man, that same year. Together they raised two children, Mark and Diane.

In the early 1960s, the family purchased a summer cottage at Popham—also named Paradise—where they spent many wonderful summers until a November storm claimed it to the sea.

Muriel and her husband shared a passion for antiquing and attending auctions. Early American glass and the history of glassmaking became their primary focus and lifelong interest.

Throughout her life, Muriel remained close to many childhood friends, some dating back to kindergarten. They enjoyed playing bridge, sharing lunches, and gathering for both formal and informal occasions across the decades.

Later in life, Muriel married Edward “Chick” Myers, and together they enjoyed researching their genealogy. Travels in search of family roots took them from Sabattus to the Canadian Maritimes. After Chick’s passing, Muriel found companionship with longtime family friend Ken Kilgore. They were good for—and to—each other until his passing.

Following Ken’s death, Muriel moved to Schooner Estates, and later to Schooner Memory Care, where she had been lovingly cared for over the past eight years. The family wishes to express deep gratitude to the Schooner staff and to Andwell Hospice for their devoted care and compassion.

Muriel is survived by her son, Mark Hiebert and his wife Cindy, her daughter, Diane Hiebert, and her companion Alvin Leino; grandchildren Luke and his wife Tracy Hiebert, Matthew and his wife Sarah Hiebert, Kiirsten and her husband Dustin Knowles, and Molly Farrington; great-grandchildren Kira Hiebert, Jadynn Knight, and Sophia Knowles; and bonus great-grandchildren Brooke, Ryan, and Benjamin Beckerman.

She was predeceased by her father, Frederick Walker of Sabattus, her mother, Gladys Rogers Gilbert of Auburn; her first husband, Joelle C. Hiebert Jr., and her second husband, Edward Myers.

Interment will take place at Mt. Auburn Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care of Chandler Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 45 Main St., South Paris. Online condolences may be shared with her family at http://www.chandlerfunerals.com.

Now in peace forever.
