The city of Lewiston’s only existing sheltered infrastructure within Simard-Payne Memorial Park by the Androscoggin River could become a venue for community events.

Lewiston Rowing currently leases the Red Shop building to store boats and equipment, but there is plenty of room for other purposes to benefit the community, according to the organization’s executive director, Amy Smith.

Smith says the Red Shop could be used to host river-focused events, parties, and classes, to provide youth-focused activities like summer camps, and more.

If you have an idea or just want to hear what other people are thinking, there is an open house scheduled Wednesday, Nov. 19, from 3-6 p.m. There will be live music and food at the event.

The Red Shop is part of Lewiston’s history. It was built in 1938 on the canal system to control the flow of water in one area and as a machine shop for the Bates Mill complex.

The post and beam construction offers ample ceiling height and there is room for a small kitchen and bathrooms and a viewing deck. The building is 2,400 square feet and has two levels.
