BRUNSWICK — The schedule makers knew what they were doing when Yarmouth/Freeport visited Brunswick on Day 2 of Maine’s high school girls hockey season.
The rematch of the 2025 Northern Maine final went into overtime, and the visiting Clippers opened their season with a 2-1 victory at Bowdoin College’s Watson Arena.
The Clippers were eager for the rematch and wanted to win for coach David Intraversato, who missed the game after receiving a red card while coaching the Freeport girls soccer team in the Class B South playoffs.
“I know our coach, Dave, was definitely excited to have the first game be them, because he really wanted to come out and beat them,” said Adelaide Strout, who scored the game’s first goal. “Since he isn’t here, we did that for him. I just hope he’s really proud of us, because I think we did really, really good.”
Brunswick coach Chris Ledwick, whose team won the regional final 2-1 in February, wished his team had come out with a little more fire to open the season.
“Not excited enough, I don’t think, in the first period,” Ledwick said. “I thought if we had had the energy in the first period that we had in the third period, it could have been a better game for us, but it’s a long season — nobody’s getting a trophy today. You want to win all your games, but yeah, this happens sometimes.”
How did it happen?
Strout wasted little time getting Yarmouth/Freeport on the board, as her shot slipped between the pads of Brunswick’s Hensleigh LaBonte (34 saves) just shy of the two-minute mark of the opening period.
The scored remained 1-0 until the third period. The Clippers were on a power play, but Celia Zinman received a five-minute boarding call and a game misconduct with 5:51 left in regulation. Off the ensuing faceoff with the teams skating 4-on-4, Delia Vital ripped a shot past Clippers goalie Lydia Costa (10 saves) after Natalie Perham won the draw.
Maya Nasveschuck celebrated her 16th birthday by scoring the winner 6:11 into the extra session, scoring from the slot after the Clippers moved the puck around the offensive zone. Sophia White got an assist.
“Yeah, best birthday ever,” Nasveschuck said. “I think Sophie was like going around the net and then she like shot or something; it just bounced right to me.”
They said it
“It was a very good team effort. Then, of course, this girl gets her freaking birthday goal, which was really nice because she really deserved it.” — Strout
“Delia was right there on it, and she’s got a great shot, so she’s a nice addition to the team. She can certainly shoot the puck out there, so it gives us a little more firepower to get some hard shots on (net), for sure.” — Ledwick, on his team’s goal
