DEAR SUN SPOTS: A holiday fair will be held Saturday, Dec. 6, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Sixth Street Church, 109 Sixth St. in Auburn.

There will be raffles, food, knitted goods and a white elephant table. Vendor tables will be available for $10. Vendors are invited to call me at 782-4413. — Beth, Auburn

ANSWER: This holiday fair was originally scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 22, but work being done at the church caused the fundraiser to be postponed.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Do you know if the group Dress for Success is still accessible? After our holiday fair, we will have a large quantity of jewelry we would like to donate. I’d also like information about the group in Auburn that accepts preowned prom dresses. I’m looking forward to your response. — No name, Lewiston

ANSWER: Dress for Success in South Portland is permanently closed. However, I recommend that you reach out to Andwell Hospice Thrift Store at 245 Center St., Unit 2, in Auburn (312-5092). I think this would be an appropriate place to donate the jewelry and any other newer, classic career wear and accessories such as purses and shoes, that you may have.

The nonprofit that takes prom dresses and fancy accessories to go with those gowns is The Woman’s Literary Union at 19 Elm St. in Auburn. Every spring, the doors are opened to young women attending proms. The contact is Kathy Lawrence at [email protected]

Of course, readers, if you know of any other spots to donate these items, please share!

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I’m wondering if anyone might have the recipe for the chocolate cake with whipped cream frosting that Eith’s Bakery on Hampshire Street in Auburn used to sell. It was a childhood favorite! — Deborah, no town

ANSWER: Does anyone in Sun Spots Land remember this bakery and this particular cake? I’d love to hear more about it, and if you have the cake recipe or a similar one, please let us know!

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Donating canned goods to help feed the hungry is a great idea; just keep in mind that some people don’t have a can opener. When possible, donate cans that have pop top lids. Just a thought. — Linda, no town

ANSWER: More and more, I’m seeing the pop-tops on canned goods. Perhaps the can opener will become obsolete. For all of you readers who can do it, please donate whenever you can, and if you want to share where and what to donate, whether you are a giver or a recipient, please write in.

Someone I know remarked recently that she was especially grateful for the baking ingredients such as flour, sugar, yeast, and spices she was able to obtain at a food pantry recently. She added that bags of chocolate chips, nuts, and jam were also very appreciated so she could make bread and cookies with her children. These small kindnesses make all the difference.
