James N. “Jim” Landry

RUMFORD – James N. “Jim” Landry died Tuesday Dec. 9, 2025 at Portsmouth Regional Hospital in Portsmouth, N.H. He was born in Rumford on Sept. 8, 1947, the son of Leo J. Landry and Flora (Gallant) Landry.

Jim graduated from Stephens High School the class of 1965. After graduation Jim worked at local mills and at construction jobs in Florida. Jim enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1966 and was discharged in 1970. He visited parts of the world during these four years including being stationed at Misawa Japan. The friends Jim made during these four years continued until his death on Dec. 9, 2025.

Upon his return to Rumford, Jim worked in area grocery stores and eventually began working for the United States Postal Service in Mexico. He loved his customers and they loved him.

Jim had a great sense of humor and loved making other people laugh with his jokes and antics, he willingly offered his Chapstick and Vick’s smelly stick to others to see their reaction. Jim willingly shared the secret of his card tricks to family and friends and showing them new tricks he had learned through the years.

Jim loved the game of chance and could often be seen at the Oxford Casino, Tuesday night Bingo at the Eagles (he loved his Bingo friends) and in area stores buying scratch tickets. He was a lifetime member of the Eagles. He also loved going to Walmart and talking to friends. Jim traveled with his wife to Atlantic City, Las Vegas and Foxwoods and Washington D.C. through the years.

Jim’s love of golfing started as a young boy while golfing with his dad; his love of golfing continued for many years. Jim was a great pool player and loved the game of 9-ball earning him the nickname of “9-ball “Landry. He won many, many trophies through the years. Jim also loved fishing and started fishing at a young age with his family. He loved taking his family fishing in his boat and introduced his grandkids to fishing too. Jim loved watching sports and was a Patriot fan. He loved the new quarterback playing for the team this year. As each of us kids and the grandkids turned 16, Jim would take them to Bingo.

Jim was a kind, honorable and decent man who loved his country and his family very much. He loved hearing about all their adventures. Jim was proud of his boys and grandkids. He loved taking the family to Old Orchard Beach and fairs. Jim also loved cooking as well as eating out with family. Jim had a huge presence in the lives of those lucky enough to know him. He leaves behind many great memories. Jim was very generous and was always willing to help others especially his kids and grandkids.

Survivors include his wife, Donna; two sons, Jamie and Joel, two sisters, Linda (Kenn) Dayon and Pam (Jim Doyle) Heath; seven grandkids, Ben, Emily and Olivia Smith and their mom Renee; Paige Erin, Saydie and Lucy Landry and their mom, Stormie.

Jim was predeceased by his parents; and his beloved son, Lee.
