Snowfall throughout most of Sunday brought a few more inches of powder to most of southwest Maine.
As of 2 p.m., Cumberland County got between 1 and 3 more inches of snow, with 2.5 inches measured in Portland and 2.4 inches in Gray, according to the National Weather Service in Gray.
Between 1-2 inches of snow fell on Oxford, York and Sagadahoc counties as of midday. Lewiston reported 1 inch as of 11:30 a.m., and less than half an inch fell on Lincoln County. Bangor and the eastern half of the state remained dry.
Snowfall will taper off in the evening, with flakes stopping between 7-9 p.m.
The National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather outlook alert for southwest and south central Maine on Sunday due falling snow and slick roads impacting visibility and driving conditions. Speeds have been reduced along the entirety of the Maine Turnpike to 45 mph, according to the Maine Turnpike Authority, and no oversized vehicles are allowed on the highway.
For ocean conditions along all of Maine, the agency issued a gale warning from 7 p.m. Sunday to 1 a.m. Monday for northwest winds between 20-30 knots with gusts up to 40 knots.
“Strong winds will cause hazardous seas which could capsize or damage vessels and reduce visibility,” according to the weather service’s website.
Winds will also have an effect on Monday morning’s weather, as windchill will make the temperatures feel at or below zero across the state.
“Definitely, definitely bundle up in the morning tomorrow,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Jerry Combs. “Dress for the weather.”
The windchill will keep the temperature feeling like it is in the single digits and teens most of Monday, even though the actual temperature will be in the 20 degree range.
The cold may lessen beyond Monday, forecasted Combs. He said that while there is a chance of precipitation Thursday evening, it is likely to be rain instead of snow.
“By Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, we could have highs in the 40s, which will feel quite warm compared to what it has been lately,” said Combs.
