LEWISTON — A former Lewiston man was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison Monday in the 2024 shooting death of a teenager on Rideout Avenue.

Nasib Aden, 23, was sentenced to 15 years after he pleaded guilty to manslaughter in Androscoggin County Superior Court.

All but 30 months of the sentence was suspended.

Aden is accused of shooting 17-year-old Sahal Muridi to death in July of 2024. Murdi had been shoved out of a car and shot in the head and neck in front of his family’s home at Hillview Apartments.

The shooting rattled the community and for a time, stymied investigators. After nearly a year, Aden was tracked down in Fridley, Minnesota, by an FBI task force.

He was later returned to Maine where he pleaded not guilty to a charge of murder. Aden has remained at the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn since his arrest.

On Monday, Aden entered an Alford Plea, which allowed him to plead guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter.

Muridi was killed on a summer night plagued by gunfire in Lewiston. In addition to the fatal shooting on Rideout Avenue, police also responded to reports of gunfire on Knox and on Blake streets.

It was not believed that the three shootings were connected. Police have never offered a motive for the killing of Muridi.

The shooting was particularly troubling for the city since Muridi was so well liked in his community. At a vigil after the shooting, friends described him as kind and well-mannered and several groups came together to honor him.

“Sahal had a bright future ahead of him and an unwavering passion for helping others,” according to Rilwan Osman and Hannah Conkin of the Maine Immigrant & Refugee Services. “He was a dedicated mentor in our organizations, committed to guiding and inspiring younger kids in our community.”

At the time of his death, Muridi was just months from returning to Lewiston High School, where he would enter his senior year.

Aden’s sentence in a state prison will be followed by four years of probation.
