The Maine Mariners on Friday signed defenseman Kylar Fenton, whose father, Eric, grew up in South Portland and played for the University of Maine and Portland Pirates.

Kylar Fenton, 25, was in training camp with the Mariners and played one preseason game. He was a member of the Maine Nordiques of the North American Hockey League during the 2019-20 season.

Fenton played at Division III Gustavus Adolphus and has spent parts of the last two seasons with the Peoria Riverman of the Southern Professional Hockey League.

His father played at North Yarmouth Academy and was a forward for the UMaine team that won the school’s first NCAA championship in 1993, scoring 21 goals that season. The elder Fenton played 25 games for the Portland Pirates of the American Hockey League during the 1993-94 season, part of a professional career that lasted until 2001. He was inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame in 2019.

• Brooklyn Kalmikov scored 4:54 into overtime Friday night to give the Mariners a 2-1 win over the Florida Everblades in Estero, Florida.

Maine led 1-0 after one period, thanks to a goal by Linus Hemstrom. Florida’s Logan Lambdin tied it midway through the second.

Mariners goalie Brad Arvanitis made 28 saves.
