Winthrop police Chief Paul Ferland on Friday identified the pedestrian killed on U.S. Route 202 Wednesday in that town as Eric O. Stinson of Pittston.

Stinson, 44, died at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta after the crash, which occurred just before 6 p.m. in the area of Winthrop Veterinary Hospital at 1942 U.S. Route 202, according to police.

The crash happened when a black 2015 Dodge pickup truck driven by Merton Ward, 51, of Augusta, was heading east on U.S. Route 202 and struck Stinson, police said Wednesday in a news release.

Ferland said Friday that the speed limit on that stretch of road is 55 mph.

Winthrop police, fire and ambulance responded to the crash Wednesday and Route 202 was shut down for about 3 1/2 hours, police said. It was reconstructed by Maine State Police. Monmouth police and Maine State Police assisted with the investigation, and the Kennebec-Somerset District Attorney’s Office was notified.
