Willard M. Shurtleff
RUMFORD – Willard M. Shurtleff, 79, died Sunday Feb. 15, 2026, at the Rumford Hospital. Willard was born in Livermore, on Oct. 10, 1946, the son of Edmund and Alma (Corey) Shurtleff, Jr. He was a graduate of Stephens High School in Rumford and served in the US Army. He was a member of the American Legion and the Webb River Valley Sportsman’s Club.
He dedicated 43 years of hard work to the Rumford Mill, showing his strong work ethic and loyalty. Following his retirement in 2007 he and Diane traveled across the country together before becoming snowbirds and settling in Florida.
He loved the outdoors. Hunting and fishing weren’t just hobbies for him – they were where he felt most at peace. He was at his happiest in the woods during deer season, surrounded by nature and the quiet stillness he cherished.
He was especially proud of his Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z28. He enjoyed cars and loved watching his son and granddaughter race, cheering them on with pride and excitement.
He was also the one you called when you needed help. Whether it was a big project or a small fix, he was always there – especially for Miranda, helping her with all of her home projects. He gave his time generously and never hesitated to lend a hand. His strength, steady presence, and willingness to help others touched so many lives. There will be a void in our lives without him, but the memories he gave us will remain in our hearts forever.
He is survived by his partner Diane Arsenault; his daughters, Melinda Stewart and husband Cliff of Mexico and Sueanne Ouellette and husband Tom of Lewiston; and a sister Brenda Shurtleff of California.
Granddaughters, Miranda Sereyko (Regan), Shelby Shurtleff (Rusty Poland), Felicia Bryant (Chris) and Monica Hirschman (Will); his great-granddaughter Aspyn Jayde; and many cousins and family in the Strong area.
He was predeceased by a son Wil Shurtleff; his mother Alma Shurtleff; his father Edmund Shurtleff Jr; his brother Eddie Shurtleff; and his Uncle Richard A. Shurtleff.
He cherished not only his own family, but also Diane’s family, who became an important part of his life. Eric Arsenault (Theresa), Ami-jo Greco (Adrianna), and Kristin Arsenault (Mike Cogley). Grandkids, Dakota Arsenault (Shae), Mackenzie Arsenault (Avery Perry), Kenedi Arsenault, PJ Merrill (KK Wills), Delani Merrill (Jared Merrill) and Peyton Cogley; great-grandchild George Arsenault and Harlow Arsenault arriving next week.
